MONROE County

Our Mission

The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.

Who We Are

The LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS was founded in St. Louis, MO in 1920 after the 19th Amendment to the Constitution granted women the right to vote. Organized at the national, state, county and local levels to encourage voters, through education and advocacy, to become better informed about governmental issues. It is nonpartisan; it does not support or oppose political candidates. We pride ourselves in being a uniquely grass roots organization; the choices of study and eventual advocacy originating from members at conventions or local annual meetings, not from the national executive down.

Monroe County is located in the northeast corner of Pennsylvania embellished by the lovely Pocono mountains, with Stroudsburg as its county seat. It is the second fastest growing county in Pennsylvania, due in part to its desirability in offering green space, cooler, low humidity summers, picturesque lakes, numerous golf courses, several indoor/outdoor water parks, and numerous popular skiing resorts in the winter.

The LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF MONROE COUNTY was formed in the 1940s in Stroudsburg, PA as a county league. Today, members represent all of Monroe County from Shawnee-on-Delaware and Cresco to Mt. Pocono and Tobyhanna. The local phone number is 570-656-1864.

President Maria Wieand
